Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Faith Side (Week 14)

BarlowGirl 🎶 I Need You To Love Me 🎶 No One Like You…

BarlowGirl got their start playing together in the late 1990s as their father’s backup band — their dad, Vince Barlow, was a children’s worship musician, and the sisters performed with him at events across the U.S., eventually writing their own material during that time.

They became known not just for their music, but for their public commitment to sexual purity, modesty, and waiting on God for a future spouse — a stance that shaped their message and deeply connected with a lot of fans walking similar faith paths.

They were active in the Christian music scene from around 1999 until they retired in 2012, closing out more than a decade of ministry through music.

Over the course of their career, the band sold over a million albums and passed a million digital downloads, making them one of the more impactful female-led groups in 2000s CCM.

I have two songs for you today..

🎵 I Need You to Love Me — Another Journal Entry (2005)

Outlaw Roots — The Hank Jr. Legacy (Week 6)

Montana Cafe 🎶 Whiskey On Ice…

One thing I noticed growing up as a Hank fan — and still notice today — is that he’s known by a handful of songs that went full mainstream.. and people grabbed onto them… ones like… All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.. Family Tradition.. A Country Boy Can Survive… and a few others.

He kind of got labeled by those songs — like that’s all he’s about.
But man… nothing could be further from the truth.

Once you dig in.. you find so much more —
beautiful love songs…
raw.. well-written.. poetic ones… many are deep… magnificent… also his voice is amazing on so many… in a way you don’t really hear on his more popular ones…
real depth that never got the same spotlight.

Today’s picks…

🎶 “Montana Café”
• Title track of the album Montana Cafe
• Released: 1986

🎶 “Whiskey on Ice”
• from the album High Notes
• Released: 1982

Hope you enjoy this little dive into the deeper cuts…

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Life Side (Week 14)

Matthew Sweet — “Girlfriend” 🎵 “Sick of Myself” 🎶

Athens, Georgia is home to the University of Georgia… Go Dawgs! 🐾 — and it’s also one of the great music cities in America, birthing many iconic bands like R.E.M., The B-52’s, and Widespread Panic, just to name a few.. And this next guy… Matthew Sweet.

Matthew Sweet is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who became a key figure in ’90s alternative rock and power pop. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, he moved to Athens, Georgia to plug into that legendary scene before breaking through with Girlfriend (1991) — hooky, heartfelt guitar pop — and following it with 100% Fun (1995), featuring the self-aware anthem “Sick of Myself.” Classic melodies, honest emotion, zero filler.

🎵 “Girlfriend” — from the album Girlfriend (1991)

🎶 “Sick of Myself” — from the album 100% Fun (1995)

Hope yall enjoy this little trip back into some seriously good ’90s sound. 🎸

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Faith Side (Week 12)

BarlowGirl — 🎶 Never Alone 🎶 Beautiful Ending…

Before the charts and the stages, there were just three sisters, a living room, and a faith that needed a voice — growing up in Elgin, Illinois.

BarlowGirl — Rebecca, Alyssa, and Lauren — grew up making music the way most people learn conversation: naturally, together. They started in churches and youth events, not chasing careers, just serving with what they had.

What set them apart was unity — three voices, one heart — and the fact that they’re great musicians who truly rock. Drums, bass, guitars, keys, harmonies… real grit, real skill, real sound — not just message.

When they stepped onto bigger stages, they never lost that core.
No image games. No shortcuts. Just faith, honesty, and rock-solid music.

If you’re new to BarlowGirl, you’re not discovering a band —
you’re meeting a family who turned worship into rock and conviction into legacy.

I’ve got two live acoustic studio versions of these songs for you today…

🎵 Never Alone (2004) — BarlowGirl

🎵 Beautiful Ending (2009) — Love & War

I hope you have a blessed Sunday.

Hidden Gems From The B-Side — Faith Side (Week 11)

Sidewalk Prophets 🎶 The Words I Would Say 🎶 Live Like That…

One of the coolest things about Sidewalk Prophets is how much of their story was shaped by other people. Early on, a demo they recorded was submitted to a contest without their knowledge — and they won. That surprise moment opened doors they never planned for. Years later, they kept that same spirit of community by inviting fans to help shape the Live Like That album itself, using fan-submitted photos for the cover and even letting fans sing background vocals. From the start, their music has never been just theirs — it’s always been shared…

Here’s two more great ones from them…

🎵 “The Words I Would Say” — from These Simple Truths (2009)

🎵 “Live Like That” — from Live Like That (2012)

I pray yall have a super blessed Sunday… enjoy the music and the message…

James 1:22 (NIV)
Do not merely listen to the Word… and so deceive yourselves… Do what it says…

1 John 3:18 (NIV)
Dear children… let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth…

Was I love… when no one else would show up…?

Hidden Gems From The B-Side — Faith Side (Week 10)

Sidewalk Prophets 🎶 You Love Me Anyway 🎶 Keep Making Me…

Some bands don’t start on stages…
they start in small rooms… borrowed amps… quiet prayers… and long drives…

Sidewalk Prophets began in 2003 on a college campus in Indiana… just a few friends writing songs about faith doubt and grace while playing worship nights and whatever doors opened…
They toured in vans… played churches and coffee shops… and learned how to carry songs into real lives before anyone was listening…

That slow road mattered… because when their music finally reached the wider world… it already knew how to sit with people…

Two songs from that journey still hit me deep…
and honestly… I think these are two of the greatest Christian songs ever…
I know… that’s saying a lot…
hey… it’s just my opinion… 😁

🎶 You Love Me Anyway
(These Simple Truths 2009 — single 2011)

🎶 Keep Making Me
(Live Like That 2012)

I hope yall enjoy… thank you for your time… have a blessed Sunday…

Outlaw Roots — A Hank Jr. Series

Where My Sound Began…

Hey yall…
if you check my blog out at all… you already know how much music means to me…

Being a musician and a singer… I love all kinds of sound…
I’ve got influences everywhere — punk… rock… outlaw country… even rap…  Christian music.. of course… and more…
Throw it all in a blender and you pretty much get me… my sound…

But if I’m being real…
it all started for me with outlaw country…
with Hank Williams Jr… aka Bocephus…

Most people know him…
but they usually only know three or four of the big songs…
What a lot of folks don’t realize is — he has hundreds of songs that go even deeper than the famous ones…

To me… his music is pure art…
straight poetry…

And here’s the part that surprises people —
for a guy known for that raw… hard sound…
Hank Jr. wrote some of the best love songs I’ve ever heard…

I learned to play guitar from his music…
I learned to sing from his music…
I honestly know every single one 😁😎…

So… I’m starting something new…

Every Friday…
I’m going to feature one Hank Jr. song —
a weekly spotlight —
to help introduce people to the side of him most never get to hear…

When I really think about it…
he’s probably had more influence on me than any other artist…

His music is special…
and to most of the world…
it’s still a secret…
