Social Distortion — Hidden Gems from the B-Side (Week 31)

Angel’s Wings -♫- Down on the World Again

Mike Ness’s music and style has influenced me greatly over the years… I think maybe that Social Distortion was kind of like the missing link I had been searching myself for musically… it was the edge I was needing. I have two of my favorites for you today…

I can’t tell you how many times I have sat around strumming and singing Angel’s Wings over the years…

Angel’s Wings – Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll 2oO4 ♫

Down on the World Again – White Light, White Heat, White Trash 1996 ♫

Two songs released eight years apart, from the band’s two consecutive studio albums. Part of that long gap was shaped by the death of longtime guitarist Dennis Danell in 2OoO, a loss that deeply affected the band and delayed their return to the studio.

I also included a cool short interview with Mike Ness from 2o25. After undergoing surgery and treatment for throat cancer, he’s back out on the road doing what he loves. You just can’t stop the guy!

Also they just put out a new album, Born to Kill… in May.

Hope you enjoy.

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Tenth Avenue North… Week 30 🎧

No Man Is An Island 💯 I Have This Hope

No matter your beliefs… I like you… I’m for you. Together… we can lift each other up. We’re not meant to live this life alone.

Work on trying to let someone in… even if it’s just one.

Ain’t no life outside each other.

I have two excellent songs for you today

🎵 No Man Is an Island 2o14
🎵 I Have This Hope 2o16

Be blessed… and don’t forget.

Hebrews 10:24–25
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another

Outlaw Roots — The Hank Jr. Legacy (Week 21)

I Just Ain’t Been Able 🎶 Woman on the Run

Hey yall… hope life’s treating ya good. The weekend is upon us and I’m so ready.

As I’m putting this Hank post together, I’m listening to my Lorde and Adele playlist on Amazon Music… and it just occurred to me how crazy that is. drastic difference. 😂 I’m a huge fan of both ladies. Especially Lorde. In fact, I’m planning on covering a few of their songs soon from the Bathroom Studio. 😎

But I don’t wanna get off track here…

Let’s get back to Bocephus.

Here’s two great ones you may not have heard before.

🎶 I Just Ain’t Been Able — from Family Tradition 1979

🎶 Woman on the Run — from Man of Steel 1983

I also added a really cool video of Hank on Letterman from the early ’80s… check it out.

Thank you for listening.

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Tenth Avenue North (Week 29) 🎧 e̸d̸i̸t̸e̸d̸

Worn 🎶 Control (Somehow You Want Me)

So I’m starting a new band this week for my Sunday music post…

Tenth Avenue North started in the early 2oO0s when a group of students met at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. Lead singer Mike Donehey, drummer Jason Jamison, and their friends needed a name for a local show and couldn’t agree on one. They ended up using the name of the street where some of them lived… 10th Avenue North. The name was supposed to be temporary—but it stuck.

Before signing a record deal, they spent years playing churches, colleges, and small venues while releasing independent projects. Their breakthrough came with their major-label debut album Over and Underneath (2oO8), which included songs like Love Is Here and By Your Side.

They announced a farewell in 2o2O, but later reunited after a multi-year hiatus and returned to recording and touring. From what I’m hearing, they’re still going strong today and back out on the road again.

I first heard them in 2oO8… and I remember thinking, “these guys are pretty dang good.”

Funny story though… I actually bought into a rumor back then. Someone told me this band started in his church in Sarasota, Florida, and that they were named after the street the church was on—10th Ave N. So I ran with that for a while 😄

There’s a little truth mixed in there—they are from Florida, and they are named after a street—but yeah… not Sarasota, and not that church. That’s how stories get twisted over time.

So what happened? How do things like that even start? 😄😁

But anyway… we’ll leave that there.

Let’s get into the music.

I hope y’all enjoy 🎶

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Matthew West (Week 28) 🎧

Hey yall…

Two more great ones this week from Matthew West… (not hidden gems… 2 of his more popular ones)

Broken Things 🎶 Hello, My Name Is

Both are among my favorites of his.

I saw this comment on YouTube and thought it was pretty cool…

“Imagine you have two ceramic pots. One is cracked and missing pieces. The other is perfect. Now put a candle inside both and place a lid on them. Which pot do you see more light coming through? The broken one. That’s what God does. Sometimes you have to be broken to let God’s light shine through.”

Hope you enjoy. 🎧

Outlaw Roots — The Hank Jr. Legacy (Week 14)

Old Habits 🎵 Man Of Steel

So I’ve evolved… musically…
since I first started spinnin’ round this world…

My earliest memories—
with my mom and dad—
were The Beach Boys…
and Eagles…

Then around 8… 9 years old—
it was Michael Jackson…
Van Halen…
whatever was lightin’ up the radio back then…

Then came my early teens—
and that’s when Hank Williams Jr. hit me…

And after that…
I just exploded…

Rock…
Folk…
Punk…
Blues…
Rap…
RnB…
Christian…

A little bit of everything—
and somehow… all of it stuck.

But to me…
you can never forget where you came from…

So here’s two excellent ones from my early days—

Allow me to hike up my dress a little for you… so you can see… what im workin’ with… what my roots look like.

Man Of Steel 🎵

Outlaw Roots — The Hank Jr. Legacy (Week 13)

New South 🎵 I’m Tired

Hey y’all…
I’m so ready for the weekend…

Just wanna relax…
chill…
listen to music…
play a little guitar…

Keep it simple—
more feeling…
less words…

Here’s two Hank songs for you 👇

🎵 “New South” — 1977, from The New South

🎵 “I’m Tired” — Out of Left Field 1993

These are a little deeper cuts…
definite Hidden Gems 💎

“I’m Tired” cracks me up 😄
Funny song (at least to me)…
little bit of language—
he keeps saying “son of a beach” in the chorus…
just a heads up lol…

Anyway…
hope y’all enjoy…
and have a great weekend ✌️🎶

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Flyleaf (Week 20)

Fully Alive 🎶 All Around Me

Happy blessed Sunday yall…

I’m sticking with Flyleaf a little longer.

These next two — “Fully Alive” 🎶  “All Around Me” 🎶 — (acoustic versions)

are both from their debut self-titled album
Flyleaf (2005)…
and man… that record was something special.
Made fans out of a whole lot of people… me included.

Somewhere along the way I drifted from Lacey Sturm for a bit…
but about a year ago, I found my way back —
right around the time I started my YouTube channel “bryanforchrist.”

All I do over there is make Christian music shorts —
so if you’re ever bored one day… come check me out.
I’ve got a few Flyleaf ones up there too 🎶

And quick tip — on all my shorts, you can get to the full song:
tap the little thumbnail in the bottom right…
then when it redirects, go up top left and tap the larger thumbnail —
that’ll play the whole track.
It can look a little tricky at first… but once you see it, you got it.

Now as much as I love Flyleaf…
I’ve never actually performed any of their songs myself 🎤

That’s about to change.

I think this week… I’m gonna learn “Circle” 🎶
(from their second album Memento Mori — 2009)…
it’s probably my favorite from them… hard to choose though

So again… thank y’all for listening… for reading…
I appreciate you — and I’m always thinking of you 🙏

Have a blessed day…

Outlaw Roots — The Hank Jr. Legacy (Week 11)

Dinosaur 🎶 All In Alabama

Sup yall… got two of my favorites for you today…

If I was ever forced to make a top 10 list of Hank songs… both of these are on it—no question.

I’ve played ’em hundreds of times over the years…
for myself… when no one was around…
and for plenty of others along the way…

And honestly… it’s been a little while…

So I think I’m gonna grab my guitar later…
sit back… and run ‘em both again…

Just me… the strings… and that old feeling…

But for now… let me quit talkin’…

and let’s get this thing goin’… ♩♪

🎶 Dinosaur — 1980 — Habits Old and New

🎶 All in Alabama — 1980 — Habits Old and New

Hope yall have a great weekend…
and don’t be like Hank and go fallin’ off the side of any mountains 😄♩♪

Hidden Gems from the B-Side — Drivin N Cryin (Week 19)

Fly Me Courageous ♬ Build a Fire

Hey yall… welcome…

Today I got two more from these guys…
both of ‘em take me back…

Back to around ‘98…
weekend nights… guitars plugged in…
just playing for hours…

There was this lady and her husband…
and also a guy named Dennis…
and my best friend Ron on drums…
we’d go all night…

And somewhere in the middle of it all…
between the laughs…
the beer… the whiskey… the weed…
these two songs would find their way in…

I don’t miss the stimulants…
but I sure miss the music…
the friendship…
the memories…

I think about Dennis a lot…
he passed way too young…
great guy… great guitar player…

So this one’s for you, Dennis…

Rock on, brother… 🎸
