The Apartment

What’s the weirdest coincidence you’ve ever experienced?

I probably shouldn’t tell this story, but I am.

Years ago, in the mid-90s, I was in my early 20s and my friend’s band played weekly at a local nightclub on the southside of Atlanta. Occasionally, I’d go hang out and watch the show, and sometimes he’d ask me to come up and do a song or two.

Well, one night I met this older woman. She came up to me and was telling me how much she liked my song, and we ended up talking for awhile about music and stuff. We had some drinks, and later that night I ended up going back to her place.

She told me she used to be a pastor’s wife and that she was recently divorced. I went home the following morning, and that was the last time I ever saw her.

Okay, let’s fast forward to about 2oO4.

I had met a new friend. He was an older guy, but we hit it off, and he was friends with the owner of the sports bar where I played weekly. I’d known him for a few months, and sometimes I’d go over to his house and chill, or we’d go to other bars.

One night, he and his girlfriend came and picked me up, and we went back to her place. As we turned into the apartment complex where she lived, I was like, “Hmm… these look familiar.”

Then it all came back to me.

I realized it was the same ones where the older woman I’d met years earlier had lived.

Then I saw the exact apartment.

So I started telling my friend and his girlfriend the story. I told them about the woman, how I met her, that she said she was a former pastor’s wife, and that I spent that one night with her and never saw her again.

Everyone got super quiet after I finished.

Then my friend goes, “Hey honey, didn’t you used to live in that apartment? And you used to be a preacher’s wife too?”

Dead silence.

And now I’m like…

“Ooo geees.”

She glanced back at me, and that’s when I realized it was her.

Shortly after that, we arrived at her place. It was a different apartment in the same complex where she lived now, but we all went inside and hung out.

It was straight awkward for a little while. 😁

The Woman in the Grocery Store

My Dream from a Few Weeks Ago

There was a season where I was writing about my dreams fairly regularly, but it’s been a fat minute since I’ve shared one. I’ve continued to have them—I just haven’t been writing them.

All my life my dreams have been constant, vivid, and unforgettable. Here’s one from a few weeks ago.

I was lying on a cold, hard floor, staring up at a tall ceiling lined with rows of fluorescent lights. It felt like a large commercial building. I could feel the cold pressing against my back and running all the way down my legs.

I kept thinking, Where am I?

I tried to move. I tried to lift my head, but it took everything I had. After several attempts, I finally managed to raise it just enough to look around.

I was in a large grocery store.

I could see the produce section. Women were shopping as though everything was perfectly normal. Then I ran out of strength and laid my head back down.

I remember thinking, How in the world did I end up here?

About that time, a very pretty woman in her 40s, with long brown hair and kind green eyes, knelt beside me, holding the gentlest smile, and asked, “What are you doing on the floor?”

I didn’t have an answer.

I just froze.

For what felt like about ten seconds, I just got deep into my thoughts as I looked at her, searching for words. Finally I said, “I don’t know… I’m not normally like this.”

She looked at me with such kindness, and in the softest, most sincere tone she said,

“Get up. I’ll help you.”

She reached out her hand, and I took it.

She helped me to my feet, handed me a shopping cart, and together we walked the aisles while she helped me find the things I needed.

She didn’t feel like a stranger.

She felt like my best friend.

Then I woke up.

The Girl in the Dream… the One Who Woke Me

…My Dream from a few nights ago

A few nights ago…
I found myself in this place…
in my sleep…

I was walking…

It was a quiet… quaint neighborhood—
that felt familiar…

Middle class…
working people…
doing much life here…

I wasn’t alone…

There was a beautiful young blonde girl—
probably around 17…

…and her two younger sisters…
maybe 12 or 13…

…and a young boy…
around 10…

I’ve never seen any of them before…

—but they knew me…

…they felt like my friends…

So I accepted them…

We all were walking along…
talking… laughing…

Life felt so easy…
so simple…

As if I had nowhere to be—
nothing else to do…

…and if I did…
whatever… or wherever…
—it could wait…

I felt younger too…
maybe 18… 20…

As the five of us slowly moved down the street…
just talking…

The older girl asked me—

“Do you know my father?”

I didn’t…

I didn’t even know her…

Then she asked—

“What kind of man do you think he is?”

So I thought for a second…

And judging by his daughter…
by her character in my dream…

I figured him for a good man—

hard working…
loved his family…

She said—

“Yes… you are correct…
he is all these things…”

Then she looked deep into my eyes…
smiled…

…gently placed her hand in mine—

just to hold… as we walked…

Then she rested her head
on my shoulder…

…and I felt something—
light…
soft…

…caressing my neck…

All of a sudden—

I snapped back…
to reality—

I thought of my girlfriend…

My real one…
in real life…

I could see her face in my mind…

I felt my love for her—
she filled me…

I felt so bad…

Like I was doing something wrong—
with this other girl… even in a dream…

I tried to free myself…
pull my hand away—

…but it wasn’t that easy…

I started to panic…
just a little…

And then—

I woke up…

Thinking about my lady…

Miles, Music, and a Few Tricks Along the Way

What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had…?

I’ve done a lot… I love a lot.

Sports… fishing… music… writing…
working out pretty religiously these days…
and I’ve always loved driving… oh… I’m a people and animal whisperer too…

I drove 18-wheelers all across the U.S. for 17 years… professionally.
Spent time training student drivers with FedEx Ground…
that part stayed with me… something about watching it click.

Same thing with teaching guitar and music back in the day…
there’s something about passing things on.

But if we’re talking secret skills…

I can juggle.

Learned it as a teenager from a guy at a pool hall…
with billiard balls.

And this one’s a little ridiculous but true…

I can throw grapes so high they disappear…
wait… track them back down out of the sky…
and catch them in my mouth.

Oh… and I can juggle grapes and eat them at the same time…

Yeah… I know… lol…

Nothing special… just a fun way to feed your face.

Not today though… too much other stuff to juggle…

People Are My Politics…

How have your political views changed over time?

Oh yeah baby… I get around
I’ve stood in different places… believed different things… carried just about every opinion imaginable at some point
And honestly… I appreciate that… because it’s helped me respect people with all kinds of views…

That’s the beauty in my “politics…”
I’m all about people…

Not their labels
Not their party
Not their category
Not their “side”

Yeah… I have beliefs… political… faith wise… life wise
My journey started early

I was maybe 8 years old when I asked my grandmother what the difference was between red and blue
She smiled and said… Democrats are for the poor man and Republicans for the rich… geeees grandma…

So that’s where it all began
And wow… it’s been a journey I tell ya…

But today

None of it matters much…
People matter…
Hearts matter…
Humans matter…

So let’s love them… you and me
That’s the only “politics” I care to fight for anymore…

trust everyone…
but cut the cards…
