Reach for the Sky 🎶 Far Behind
Back around 2oO4, my baby sister met this guy. He was a punk rock skateboarder dude, not my sister’s normal type. His name was Tony. We became good friends. He hung out with guys in bands. On the weekends I would jam with them all. Tony turned me onto this next band, Mike Ness and the boys, aka Social Distortion, or Social D as their fans call them.
I had heard of them. I was familiar with two of their songs and I liked them, but I had no idea the depth of their music, and little did I know they would become my favorite.
Mike Ness is special. He founded the band in 1978 in Fullerton, California, Orange County, just outside of LA. Their early stuff was just raw rebellious punk rock, but they evolved into something unique. They are a mix of punk, country, rock, and blues, almost like a rockabilly type sound, very melodic but gritty. Mike writes great songs, lyrically and musically.
They are still going strong today, just put out a new record. They are true to themselves, the music, the fans. Mike and the boys are all heart. This is what I love about them. I think it’s why I connect like I do.
I have been deeply influenced by them. Tony died in a motorcycle accident a few years after I met him. I’m reminded of him often as I strum and sing their songs.
Here’s two good ones to start you off…
Reach for the Sky — 2oO4, Sex, Love and Rock ’n’ Roll 🎶
Far Behind — 2oO7, Greatest Hits 🎶

I just commented on your story about horses… I don’t see it. It may have went to your spam bin or It’s an issue on my end

This brings back major Plaid Retina memories from traveling with my boyfriend and the band. Social D and Mike Ness were just one of the backgrounds back then — same lane as Misfits and Dead Kennedys. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago. Funny enough, I saw they’re playing Reno in September, then SF and Oakland.

Ooo that’s so cool! I’m sure you have some great stories and memories of those days. Those are some great bands you mentioned. I’m actually listening to Social D as I type this 😁… they just happened to start playing randomly right now lol. Thats great about the September dates. My birthday is the 12th. It’s so awesome to see them still going strong after all these years. Maybe I will get to see them. I’ll have to look into all the dates 😎

I definitely have some great stories from those days — and a lot of pictures too. I’m pretty new to WordPress, so I’m just starting to put some of it out there. Funny timing on Social D playing for you; they always seem to show up right when they’re supposed to. The September dates look solid… you might end up with a birthday show if the timing lines up.

That’s awesome. I’d love to see some of those stories and pictures when you start putting more of them out there. I’m fairly new to WordPress also. This is my first time bogging and I started back in Nov. It’s nice to meet you. I look forward to your future posts

Thank you — that really means a lot. I’d love to see more of your posts too, especially since we’re both still finding our rhythm on here. I’m also working on a book right now, so some of that will probably make its way onto my page as I keep posting. It’s really nice meeting you, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of what you share. Hope you have a nice evening:)

You’re welcome… and pardon my manors… welcome to WordPress. Ooo that’s cool about your book. Wow That’s similar to me. One reason I started the blog is because in the next few years I’m planning a book about my life. So now I’m writing my stories in between my music posts and other stuff lol. It will be my first book. I want a movie deal too 😄 might as well speak that into existence 😁 and yes yes can’t wait to read all about you. You have a nice evening as well.
