My Parents… The Strangest Love I’ve Ever Seen

I’ve been texting with a friend all day…
in between living life…

We got on the topic of this life of mine…
and somehow… my parents came up.

After telling him some things…
I started thinking…

Man… my mom and dad are strange.
Not them as people…
their relationship.

It’s just… different.

They’ve known each other forever… all their lives…

I mean since they were little bitty kids.
I believe… since babies.

They lived next door to each other.
Their families were close.
Friends… neighbors…

They grew up side by side.

Playmates…
then boyfriend and girlfriend as kids…
carried it through elementary school…
into high school…

They were in love.

They got married.
Planned to have me…

Succeeded 😎

I was born… started spinning around this earth… like everyone else.

Then when I was 5…
they got divorced.

Just like that.

It wasn’t some huge dramatic thing either…

they were just bored.

Like they realized
they were all each other had ever known…
thought they were missing something out there.

So they walked away.

Not long after…

they both met other people.
Quick.

Got married again.
Both of them.

Both of those marriages…
were disasters.

Five… six years later…
both divorced again.

But here’s the part that always got me…

through all of it…

they stayed close.

I mean really close.

Always together.

They’d hang out…
go to movies…
go shopping…
even take trips together.

Like… what?

It was like they were married…
but weren’t.

They got along better than most married couples I’ve ever seen.

Then one day… when I was 24…

they told me they needed to talk.

Both of them.

Sat me down in the living room…

real serious.

And I’m thinking…

Alright… what is this?
Who’s sick?
Is it cancer?
Who died?
What’s going on?

They’ve never done this like this before.

So they ask me…

“How would you feel…
if we got married again?”

“Sure! I’m all for it!
I want yall happy!”

“So who’s the lucky man and woman?
Double wedding or something?”

Nah…
Not even close.
Bruh…
They meant each other.
Again.

Now you’d think I’d be happy, right?

That’s my mom and dad.

But honestly?

It was weird.

Most of my life…
they were just friends.

They had been married to other people…
dated other people…

but somehow always stayed close.

So I gave them my blessing.

Even though it felt strange.

First time I saw them kiss…
it creeped me out… 😁

So they got married.

Bought a big house.

Within about six months…

everything started falling apart.

Arguing all the time.
Couldn’t get along.

I remember thinking—

What happened?

Where did that friendship go…
the one I watched my whole life?

They stayed married another ten years.

Barely speaking.
Sleeping in different rooms.

Both… unhappy.

Then they divorced.

Again.

Not long after that…

they became best friends.

Again.

Now I just have to laugh.

Like… you’ve got to be kidding me.

But I will say this—

I’ve learned a lot about love from them.

What to do…
what not to do…

One thing I know for sure…

When it comes to love…

I’m nothing like them.

And if I didn’t look like both of them…

I’d swear I was adopted.

  1. Loia … this was actually very human…
As we are full of mistakes and what not ..you know it’s like once u r together you crave something different and then when you are not there thats when you realise you need them more than anything in your life!
Not an issue … keep moving my friend 🌷😇

  2. Humans are so mysterious. It’s amazing we even make it through the day somehow. I guess their souls need each other in ways that will never make sense to anyone but them.

    Thank you for sharing this!

  3. And if I didn’t look like both of them…

    I’d swear I was adopted.

Thank you for the smile today. 🙂 I find it so funny when when I see a mother or father walking with a mini carbon copy of themselves. It’s uncanny how we resemble our parents.

  4. It’s perfect how much you’ve learned from their interesting and highly unusual relationship. Sometimes we do appreciate others more when we are not tethered by contract – then it feels like *freedom* to be together.

  5. Wow! Man, that must be difficult.
    Quick story:
I met this woman when I was the lobby pianist for a hospital. I was playing and singing and she came over and asked me to play at her wedding. I met with her and her ex-husband of 20 years. They had remained friends all that time and were marrying again. I played a concert for their wedding. Great couple. They’ve been together about 10 years now. Hope they make it this time around.

  6. Voice is my first instrument. I learned guitar at 13. Don’t play much now although I have two. I also play the recorder (soprano and alto), the Native American Flute, and small percussion instruments. I have other instruments, which I would like to learn to play. I need to make the time.

    1. Ooooo so cool! … so I started out singing when I was a little boy… then in elementary school and all through junior high and high school… I was in chorus… I was a tenor when I was young… then my voice got deeper… today I can do both tenor & bass… learned to read music early in life & sight read… started playing guitar when I was 14… guitar and bass… piano not long after… I also play harmonica… I’m horrible on drums 😆… I mean I can keep a great groove with my hands… but when I have to start incorporating my feet with the bass drum… I get all screwed up 😁… and I’m 52 and I’ve noticed my voice isn’t what it used to be… I mean it’s still sounds alright… but can’t hold notes as long as I used to could… I run out of breath quicker lol

      1. Sounds like you have great talent! I can’t play drums either. As for vocals, mine are sure not what they used to be. I have a decade in you. I lost my voice for nearly two years because of an allergic reaction to meds, with precious moments now and then. This happened in 2000 at the beginning of the pandemic when we weren’t allowed doctor appointments. I needed a scope in March. Didn’t get one until September. Then had to have a throat biopsy. Thankfully no cancer. I need to warm up every day like I used to. Got out of the habit.
But about your voice, are you letting too much air pass, or are you maybe pushing too much air? Either will cause this problem. Or an allergy/asthma/smoking…
I taught voice for over two decades.

      2. Woohooo @ no cancer! 🙌🥳

I used to smoke years ago… may have something to do with that… I probably should warm mine also… I haven’t been doing that… I just grab my guitar most days and start playin n singin lol… I just recently picked the guitar back up almost a month ago… I took a break for 3 years… just got burned out… had to find it again 😁… and I did… got that fire n passion back now from when I was younger… even though I wasn’t playing guitar past 3 years… I was still singing daily… always had a song n my heart n on my lips

      3. Haha I feel you… throughout my life I’ve had super callouses… then lost them past 3 years… but I’ve regained them some this past month… I play daily building them… their fairly tough after just a month… I can hold a flame to them with no pain… I actually use fire to help condition them
